From Molly Williams, held in slavery, bravely serving as a firefighter in the early-1800s, to Judy Brewer, the first full-time career female firefighter hired in the United States, women have slowly but surely carved a place in this profession. Today, the fire service in the United States boasts around 15,000 women serving as career firefighters and an additional 78,000 volunteers.

Incidents included questioning her authority and an alleged act of a colleague urinating on her belongings. Reynolds plans to drop two pending discrimination lawsuits in exchange for the settlement, which represents the largest ever in a fire department discrimination case. The settlement follows the city’s history of addressing harassment claims, with recent settlements totaling $2.8 million in the past two years alone.
